June Anderson McLain, much-loved wife, mother and Nana to grandchildren and great grandchildren, passed away on July 19, 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas, at age 97.  She was flamboyant and spontaneous.  One never needed to wonder what was on her mind.  June will be remembered for her outgoing personality, wise counsel and a twinkle in her eye that hinted at her delightful sense of humor.

June was born on June 14, 1926.  She grew up in Fairmont, Delaware, and at 4 years old, lost her mother who was 46 at her birth.  She had four sisters, the youngest 12 and the oldest 22 when she arrived.  She became the apple of her father's eye – his constant shadow throughout her youth.  June graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in education and began her teaching career.  As a young woman, she arrived in the home of her sister in Vernon, Texas, where she taught elementary school.  After hearing about a handsome young man who owned an airplane and part interest in the local airport, June signed up for flying lessons hoping to get a date.  Six months later, she embarked on a 65-year marriage with the pilot, who became the love of her life, Clinton "Bud" McLain.  Even though Delaware and Texas were vastly different, she soon adjusted and became a devoted Texan.  June was Bud's constant advocate and companion, serving as vice president and bookkeeper for McLain Farm Equipment while supporting the family ranch operation.

She loved her close-knit life with Bud in Crowell, where they brought up two daughters, Cathy and Kristi.   As a dedicated mother, for 14 years she was room mother for the girls at the local school.  She later taught for many years at the same elementary school where she influenced a generation of kids, often teaching the children of former students. She was an active Crowell volunteer, serving as President of the Women's Service League as well as Director of the Crowell Chamber of Commerce.  She is a former member of the Adelphian Study Club.  June directed the Women's Auxiliary of the Texas Southwest Hardware and Implement Association as President.  In later life, June and Bud traveled extensively.  She was a voracious reader and loved playing bridge, throughout her 97 years.

Her love and strength of family provide the most endearing memories of her.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Hannah Townson Anderson, her four sisters: Gladys, Rhoda Ann, Dorothy and Velma, and husband Clinton "Bud" McLain.  June is survived by her two daughters and their families: Cathy McLain Garrett Thompson (Tim), from McKinney, TX; sons Breck Garrett (Ellie), Dallas, TX, and Michael Garrett (Ainsley), Itaca, NY; Kristi McLain Hoban (Dick), Fort Worth, TX, and their son Jeffrey Hoban (Kate), Richardson, TX, and daughter Sarah Pennebaker (Sid) and children Lana and Owen, Garner, TX.  She had 5 great grandchildren: Darby and Wilder Garrett, Miles "Milo" Garrett, and Patrick and Whit Hoban.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Clinton "Bud" and June McLain Scholarship fund at Vernon College or the Crowell Cemetery Association.

Visitation will take place at the Smith Funeral Home in Crowell, Texas, on July 24, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m. The Celebration of Life for June will be held at 1 p.m. on July 25, at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel, followed by interment at the Crowell Cemetery.
