Jean Marie
Halbert
Jun 21, 1925 — Jul 30, 2018
Spring
Jean's short story: Jean Marie Halbert, 93, passed on to a greater life with her Lord on the afternoon of July 30, 2018. Jean, better known as either Mrs. Halbert to her many students or as Mur to many family and friends, was born to Harry and Freda Sherwood in Crosbyton, Texas, on June 21, 1925. She graduated from Crosbyton High School and Texas Tech University.
She married the love of her life, Kenneth, on September 1, 1943, just five days before the US Army sent Kenneth to various islands in the Pacific for three years during WWII. After Kenneth was discharged from the Army in 1946, the two began making a home, Halbert Haven, on their farm in the Foard City community. After their children, Seth and Harriet, became school-age, Jean began her long teaching career that, over the years, would see up to three generations of Foard County students go through her classes. She accompanied many of those students to U IL contests, where many competed in one act plays and won awards from the District to the State contests.
In their retirement years, Jean and Kenneth were able to enjoy each other, and their quest to experience worldwide cultures, by visiting multiple sites on every continent, including Antarctica. Regardless of where the two traveled, their love of the land always drew them back to their refuge, Halbert Haven in Foard County, Texas.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Freda Sherwood, and her husband, Kenneth.
She is survived by her sister Freda Largent of Glenrio, NM; son, Seth Halbert of Weatherford, Texas; daughter, Harriet Schroeder of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Konrad Halbart, Lauren Mayfield, Kristin Hatteberg, Kari Lecas; and eight great-grandchildren.
